Insight to Silverlight

Wooooooooooossssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! That is usually the noise you will hear from my end of the studio. As a Multimedia Developer/Designer I am inspired and enthusiastic about motion graphics. So when I was offered a three day training course for Microsoft’s competitor of Flash, Silverlight, I was looking forward to making more stupid noises.

Firstly, Silverlight is the plug-in to view rich media content. These applications are created with three packages, Expression Design(design), Expression Blend (development environment) and Expression Encoder (video).

As a Multimedia Developer I was impressed with the video capabilities. In particular was the example provided by Microsoft, cutting a movie into many jigsaw pieces where each piece had a section of the movie still playing whilst not reducing speed performance.

The selling point for many developers (although not in my area of expertise I feel it is worth mentioning) is the integration of .NET.

The manner in which the applications are produced using the three programs (as mentioned) enable more efficient workflow throughout the team.

After completing the three day course, I questioned myself, “How is Silverlight going to compete with Flash?”, and my answer..... I didn’t have one. Admittedly, the program is in its early stages and I have no doubt that Microsoft, with their resources will provide a worthy contender to Flash. I look forward to using my library sound effects on upcoming Silverlight projects.
