Symfony - what and why???

Bluhalo has moved over to using the symfony web application framework. After historically developing and maintaining a variety of platforms including Perl, mod_perl, Mason, ColdFusion, ASP and PHP, the development team made a choice to use the symfony framework. This enables us to develop web-sites in a focused, coordinated way; the framework uses many of the best ideas set forward by Ruby on Rails, without the complexity of learning another language. The framework is based on PHP5, and uses the enhanced object oriented features that this brings. We encourage developing reusable components; this speeds up code development, and reduces bugs through the reuse of tested and trusted code. Two of the key features that aid the structuring, readability and maintainability of object-oriented code are MVC and ORM.

MVC

The Model View Controller architecture enables us to create well designed code that allows the programming and html teams to focus on their specialist areas. The model layer encapsulates the data layer, which may consist of databases (MySQL, Microsoft SQLServer or others), WSDL/SOAP data providers, XML/RSS/Atom feeds. This layer also contains the business logic for the web applicationThe controller layer connects the view layer to the business logic; generally this consists of handling requests from the visitor, retrieving or storing information using the business logic in the model layer, and preparing data for display by the presentation layer. The presentation, or view, layer provides the layout for the data in the website. Usually this consists of HTML/CSS, but equally this could be targeted for mobile phones in WML or similar.

ORM

The object relational mapper allows us to write code without directly accessing the database; no knowledge of SQL is necessary. Of course, performance optimisations can still be carried out to ensure the site is highly responsive; but ease of development is improved through the global use of objects.Microsoft are adding both of these features to Silverlight 1.1 alpha; symfony already has it!

Other Features

The list of features available within the framework is very comprehensive:* Ajax support* Routing (smart URLs)* Caching* Templating* i18n (internationalisation)* Unit testing* a book

Community

The strength of the framework lies in the large community of developers now writing applications in the language. The framework is constantly being improved, and features that do not fit directly within the framework are contributed as plugins that can be added to an application to enhance functionality. The list is too long to include here, but includes everything from payment gateway APIs, user management, CMS, search, RSS feeds, News, Blog, Forum, SEO, fancy javascript effects, and many more. Many of these will be featuring in the bluhalo website - coming soon!

Ranked again!

We're popping up in all sorts of league tables at the moment! That's got to be a good sign!

This time it's Marketing Magazine's Digital Leagues. The leagues identify the top digital agencies based on turnover from the previous financial year.

This year, Bluhalo was ranked 57th, 12 places ahead of our ranking last year in the same league.

And after appearing in the Deloitte Tech Fast 50, we're looking forward to seeing where we rank in the Deloitte European Tech Fast 500 later this month.

Geeks Vs. Freaks

I've now nearly been at Bluhalo for three months, so I thought it worthwhile to jot down a couple of my key thoughts so far.

I'm lucky (or unlucky if you count my agency that folded spectacularly in the original dot com gold rush!) enough to have experienced working at four very different digital agencies, so it's very interesting for me to look back at compare how they've all approached things. All have had straplines that are designed to sum up their USP or 'difference'. One of them (the biggest agency I've worked for) used 'ideas that work'. This one always made me laugh, as it's hardly going to be 'ideas that don't work'. Look at bit deeper though and you can see the point. There's absolutely no point in presenting an idea to a client that is likely to win a handful of Revolution Awards, a fist of IPA Effectiveness awards and a gold Cyber Lion at Cannes IF the idea isn't based on sound commercial judgement. As a strapline, 'ideas that work' is very noble and tips its hat at commerciality. The reality was occasionally very different though and sometimes it was obvious that an idea was more award-winning than ROI winning.

Bluhalo's strapline is 'Creativity Cultivated'. 'What does that mean?' was one of the first questions I asked in my interview. Spencer explained it with his normal passion and it makes sense. A team built round the skills and ambitions of the individual is more likely to succeed than not. Most agencies talk about a collaborative style of working and this is rightly very important, but it's not only collaboration with our clients that produces the best results, it's also how we work with each internally and produce great ideas. Afterall, without an idea, you are nothing!

It was this idea of collaboration that really got me thinking about my agency experience. It also got me thinking about a phrase Spencer had used as panelist at the E-Den event....'Geeks v Freaks'. I had never heard of this before, but basically it's an old digital description that sums up the age-old battle for control between the tecchies (affectionately named 'geeks'!) and the creatives (equally affectionalty referred to as the 'freaks'). To me, the success of an agency largely depends on how you get these two groups working together.

Alas, not all agencies will agree on this. My first agency (the one that died in the year 2000!), was very much driven by the technical approach and this was reflected in the hierarchy of the agency. Tech first, design second. The Geeks were in control and ruled the roost at brainstorms. At my second agency, now 170 strong and one of the biggest in the UK, the approach was the complete antithesis of my first. Very much formed in the image of BBH advertising (think Levi's, Audi and Vodafone), where the founder was the MD, the Freaks ran the show. To such an extent that I don't ever recall a brainstorm with a tecchie present. Ideas were generated by 'teams', which comprised of an art director and a copywriter. These were then presented back to the client in a pretty much unadulterated form.

I'm not 100% convinced that this traditional advertising approach always works. Yes, creative boundaries are pushed and I would suggest that it is the correct approach for online advertising campaigns, but is it the best approach for websites? Does a creative team consider in enough detail the overall user experience or functionality that will create a killer app? To me, the jury is still out.

So, the big question is how does Bluhalo's approach differ? Well, it's early days for me, but I don't sense a hierarchy between the Geeks and Freaks. We talk about a collaborative style of working and I genuinely think we do a good job of it. Believe me, it's not an easy task and a digital agency without argument or debate is going about things in the wrong way. We also use another strapline when trying to explain our overall approach to clients - 'by making our clients successful, we make ourselves successful. If I were a client in the process of appointing an agency, this is exactly the philosophy I would be looking for. I would want to partner an agency that focuses on achieving my commercial objectives, rather than producing functionality for functionality's sake or design to impress an awards judge. This is what Bluhalo does well and doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

I'll tell you if I've changed my opinion in another three months!

Our talents are never-ending....

Not only do we hold great parties and build fabulous websites, we also have some water-based talent in the team too!

Theresa represented Bluhalo in the agency team at this year's Microsoft Dragon Boat Challenge at Eton College Rowing Centre - with the team coming a very close second! (Sounded like a great excuse to get a day out of the office too!)

Here's some pictures from the day below:

Countdown to Bluhalo's new branding launch

The days are counting down now until the official launch of Bluhalo's new-look branding. Everything from our logo through our client case studies to our internal flow charts are now showing the new branding - final checks are being carried out as I type with the official launch scheduled for office move day! All the branding updates have been carried out by our dedicated digital design team who have worked many hours ensuring everything is looking as it should (super cool of course!) for the UK's fastest growing design and build agency!

The Statement of Capability has received its finishing touches this morning. It is a fantastic document that provides prospective clients with everything they would need to know about Bluhalo. It begins with Bluhalo's history, culture, brand values and financial statement, touching upon each of our service areas including design, web services, multimedia, ecommerce, content management, CRM, usability and accessibility and even covers our history, key players and processes. If you'd like to have a look - just give us a shout!

The new stationery is off to the printers today, so we'll expect our shiny new business cards back next week when all the pieces should fall nicely into place! The current website www.bluhalo.com will be showing the new logo imminently. Watch this space for more exciting updates!

Bluhalo Visitor Experience

One of the reasons that Bluhalo decided to move to The Hub was because of the excellent first impressions that you get when arriving at the building.

Spencer Gallagher felt that the thought and care taken during the redevelopment were of a high standard that reflects Bluhalo's own philosophy and approach to our clients' work; and that the two side by side will give a great visitor experience:

Close up of The Hub's sign

Fountains and sign at the entrance to The Hub

Exterior view of Aviators and the fountains at the front of The Hub; an area that Bluhalo will be taking advantage of not just for staff but clients as well!

The Hub's Reception Area

Informal seating area at the front of the building
